Our team started the 2013/14 league season with a good win against new comers Oratory Youths. The game finished 3-1 thanks to goals from Joseph Vella, Fernando Giarrizzo and Eman Bugeja.

We started on the offensive, but it was against the run of play that Oratory Youths forged ahead. From a corner on our team's right the ball finished in our net as neither our players, nor goalkeeper managed to clear the ball. This unsettled our team as they lost their tactical composure and mainly resolved to long balls from defence to try to break down a team that, after the goal, grew in confidence and started defending their narrow lead by getting everyone behind the ball.

It was no surprise that the equaliser arrived from a run on the flanks. It was thanks to a typically powerful surge on the right from Peter Anizoba, who passed back to an onrushing run from Joseph Vella from the second line of attack. The latter let go a low drive that went past Oratory's keeper Elliot Fenech. This goal galvanized our team as they started producing one opportunity after another and they got their reward, just on the stroke of half time courtesy of Fernando Giarrizzo. This was his fourth goal in as many competitive games.

The second half started form where it left with our team trying to seal the issue with a third goal. Oratory fought hard in midfield but they fell to another goal by Eman Bugeja who found the net from the right flank. Our team should have scored more as they had at least three 1v1 chances against the keeper, but they did not capitalise on the situations. In fact twice Anizoba and Giarrizzo had their efforts saved by the goalkeeper. In the last quarter of an hour we had Sam Frank Bajada sent off for two yellow cards following two fouls in midfield, but we never looked like we would lose our two goal cushion. In fact the team continued to produce good scoring opportunities and could have easily added a fourth goal. It was a good win and a fine start to the league. The team showed character in turning around a game which could have been very difficult after Oratory scored. The Youths will be a tough opponent to any team. Starting on a positive note is important and to win a derby is always sweet. Our team will be facing Nadur Youngster next Sunday. Naturally we will be looking forward to test our credentials against the reigning champions.
