The second round league meeting between S.K. Victoria Wanderers and Xewkija Tigers produced drama and entertainment for the neutral. It is unlikely that there were many neutrals in the large group of supporters however and so tension was high in this important game.

Xewkija started brightly and in the early minutes produced a strong shot that came back off the crossbar. The Blues settled however and started to control the game. Unfortunately, we were to be reduced to 10 men after around half an hour of the game. A long ball forward was chased by Peter Anizoba. The goalkeeper also came out to try and get to the ball first. Peter made the decision to try and play the ball and the referee judged that his raised foot constituted a reckless challenge as the goalkeeper was close to the ball. It was a tough call which divided opinion, but ultimately we had to fight on without one of our most dangerous players.

With half time approaching, Xewkija took the lead. A cross from the left found an unmarked Xewkija player who hit a good first time shot into the bottom corner.

In the second half our boys showed why they have been unbeaten for so long. With 10 men we dominated the game for long periods and had several good opportunities. Finally one went in when a free kick from the left, taken by Joseph Vella, found the head of Fernando Giarrizzo and then the back of the net.

The game looked to be headed for a draw, which would have been a fair result in the end, but in the last few minutes of the match, Xewkija delivered a ball into our box and Mark Camilleri connected with it to give Xewkija the 3 points.

The next game will be against Hotspurs in 2 weeks time. We will aim to bounce back and continue our push for the title.
