The first game of the new league season saw us pitted against our local rivals, Victoria Hotspurs. From the start our boys took control and should have had an early penalty. Adolfo Sanz Ortiz ran past 2 players before being clearly tripped in the area. Unfortunately the referee did not have a good view and did not give the penalty.

On the half hour mark, Hotspurs took the lead with a freak goal. The ball was hoisted into the area, the player intending a cross, and the ball headed toward the goal catching the keeper off his line and looking into the sun. Joel Xiberras will perhaps feel he could have kept it out, but at the break we were behind.

The second half saw us continue to press and Aji Adesina scored an excellent equaliser after controlling a cross from Eman Bugeja, and firing past the Hotspurs keeper.

Hotspurs now started to raise their game again and took the lead from a corner, again following a rather fortuitous rebound off the post. With time running out, it seemed that luck would not be on our side, but our boys responded unbelievably.

First, from a corner of our own, John Paul Grima received a short ball and looped an amazing shot over the keeper into the far corner. This prompted scenes of mass celebration as the entire bench ran onto the pitch to celebrate what appeared to be a point-saving strike.

But we were not finished. Adolfo broke free with his pace and lobbed beautifully over the keeper to score the winner in the dying stages. Again, mayhem as the bench joined the players in a man mountain on the pitch.

This was an excellent performance, a huge team effort and a real show of mental strength, coming from behind twice as we did. Many people will still be buzzing the morning after this game, and they will be talking about it for quite a while.
